While looking at my own family tree i saw that you have my great-grandparent May Johnson who was born on 13 May 1894 (you have her as born circa 1895). I believe she died in Blackpool on 19. 5. 1981. The E-mail from Martin Johnson (S666) says that he had heard that she had lost an arm and was banished but that's not quite right. May married my great grandad John Hunter in 1916 shortly before he went off to fight in the Somme. A few weeks later he was injured and it was he that lost an arm and in effect became dependent to a large extent on May. They had three children (Mona 18. 1. 18 my wonderful Granny, Stanley and Joyce). Both Stan and Joyce are long dead but Granny is still with us at nearly 94 - fit as a flea physically but unfortunately not so good mentally due to alzheimers. When I was younger she used to tell stories about May who had by all accounts become a very bitter woman with a foul temper. In the end she and John Hunter were separated and despite being born in 1968 I never met May. My understanding was that May quarreled with most members of her family and that was why she was in effect banished. It is also why I thought she was an only child until I started the family tree!

  • [S809] Morgan, David, E-mail: David Morgan, 15/3/2016, E-mail Address: email address. co. uk
As you might notice, my name is David Morgan. My father was Harold Morgan (d. March 14th 2004) and my paternal grandmother was Isabella Wilson; regrettably she passed on when I was about 1 year old. I m not quite sure where that places us as cousins.

Looking at Harold s family, I don t know if you were aware that his brother Robert also bore the Stoker middle name. Dad married Freda Holmes of South Hetton in January 1942 just prior to embarkation for N. Africa; he served in No 4 company, 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards from 1939 t0 1946 (latterly in Palestine we believe). The family from the eldest reads:
Frederick 1946(after Frederick Arthur killed aboard HMS Dasher March 1943 in the Clyde near Arran; there is a story relating to some Wilson family member living not too far away), then me David 1948, Harold 1949, Glenys 1951, Janet, and twins Robert and John.

Looking at the photograph of the first Robert Stoker Wilson, there is most definitely a strong family resemblance with my dad and his brother Robert.

  • [S893] The Newcastle Journal, Pools winner "went to pieces' - spent £10, 000 in 2 years.
A man who started gambling and drinking after the death of his wife, spent about £10, 000 in two years, he said at Newcastle magistrates court yesterday.
Albert Arthur Johnson (61), of no fixed address, admitted obtaining a car worth £548 9s 6d from St.Mary s Motors, Newcastle, by false pretences. He was fined £25.
Johnson said that when his wife died in 1957 he went to pieces .
I took to drink and I gambled heavily. I had won some money on the pools and elsewhere and I got through about £10, 000 in the two years after my wife s death.
Superintendent H. Porter said that the car was sold to Johnson by Mr. William Christer, secretary and director of the firm on December 12.
Johnson signed a hire purchase agreement and gave Christer a cheque for £100 drawn on Barclays Bank, Chester-Le-Street and 15s. in cash.
    RETURNED
Johnson took the car away at once. Within the next few days Christer had the cheque returned and also documents he had sent to an address in Birtley given to him by Johnson.
Johnson said he now had no money at all. He lived in hotels and at his holiday caravan in Seahouses after having a row with his daughter with whom he loved when his wife died.
Johnson, an engineer, continued: When I lost my job I thought the only means of looking round for another was to travel round by car. I know I ve been a fool. I hope to make a fresh start.
