    ---------------------------------
I found out about your site from Paul Walton who I was in contact with a few years ago in connection with my Great Great grandmother Agnes McMeiken and my grandfather Albert (son of Agnes) McMeiken. I notice you have a John Thomas married to Agnes McMeiken which as I understand it, married Agnes sometime after her return from the USA where she had worked in service in Michigan. She had returned with my grandfather and it seems she had become pregnant by a member of the household where she had been working. It s said it was the son of the owner though I have no proof of this.
Over time Albert seems to have adopted his step father s surname and became know as Albert McMeiken Thomas, though he is married Margaret Wilson as just Albert McMeiken. This was kept secret until it was uncovered fairly recently by myself and cousins trying to follow our line. My father had no inkling of this until I showed him my Uncle s birth certificate. It was clear from my Uncle s birth certificate that he was christened John Thomas McMeiken although the family passed off this apparent error as an aberration by the registrar! My grandfather/grandmother were recorded as Albert & Margaret McMeiken parents. Interestingly, by the time my father was born (in 1936), my grandparents had become Albert/Margaret Thomas.
It s fairly clear that my grandfather was illegitimate and he has gone to some lengths to cover over the fact. I wondered if you ve come across in your search any information that may point to some McMeiken connections in Michigan (in particular Bessemer) where my grandfather is supposed to have been born.

    ------------------------------
Just a note about the point on your web site about Agnes moving to
Teesside. I think this may have been misinterpreted by Paul Walton as I
understand that my grandfather and grandmother were brought up in and
around Chester-le-Street (I believe Pelton Fell). I think it was my
grandparents that moved to Hartlepool (possibly) to become licensees of
a public house. There is a census record (1901) indicating Albert &
Elizabeth living together with John Thomas and Agnes McMeikan. (See
    http: //freepages. genealogy. rootsweb. ancestry. com/~jeffpiper/p34. htm#i995
    ).

The line goes something like this
    G Grandfather (unknown)
    Agnes McMEIKEN
    + Elizabeth
+ Albert Richard (1893 apparently Bessemer Michigan) [my paternal
    grandfather]
    John THOMAS
    Agnes McMeiken
    +Sarah
    +Mary
    +Jean
    +Edna
    +Warwick

    Albert Richard McMEIKEN (THOMAS)
Margaret Wilson (b1896 Chester-le-Street, died Mauchline, Ayrshire about
    1984)
    +John Thomas McMIEKEN(b1920?, died 2006)
    +Sonia (b1928?, died about 1980)
+Albert Richard McMeiken THOMAS(b1936, living my father)
    +Margot (b1936, living)

If you are able to discuss with your mother in law, would it be possible
    to mention the information below?

I'd be specifically interested in any information you may have about
John Thomas as I know nothing about him. I do understand that Mary
Herdman was a very close sister to Agnes so I believe there is a
possibility that the marriage to John Thomas may be "verbally
documented" in the Herdman family somewhere. Perhaps there is also some
information about the birth of my grandfather - the information I'd
really like to discover. He fought in the First WW 1 in the tranches I
understand for the Durham Light Infantry and he is reported as saying
that he could have fought for the Americans if he'd wanted to. This was
probably materially of little importance as he was quite badly injured
by shrapnel and was sent home. He was apparently quite an athlete and I
understand he ran was a "good" middle distance runner in his youth. My
father says he was a wily sort and he was always able to "find money" -
I think that means entrepreneurial? He seemed to find his way as a
publican (in Hartlepool) and later as a bookmaker travelling to the
races over all of the North East. I can at least validate that bit of
information as I remember my father taking me to "the races" aged about
    5.

  • [S699] Alan Morgan, A fine and private place: Jesmond Old cemetary, Coxon s was a household name throughout the north of England over three generations as one of the largest drapery stores in Newcastle. The right hand photo above was taken in the 1920s just before financial difficulties during the depression forced the shop to close, costing 300 people their jobs. Coxon s stood at the corner of Grey Street and Market Street. The picture clearly shows the dormitories built on top of the original Grainger building of the late 1830s to house staff from as far afield as Hartlepool and Barnard Castle. The cellar was the domain of the official ferret keeper employed to combat rats from the Turks Head Hotel, next door on Grey Street.
The business was established in 1830 by James Coxon, from Glanton, who with Thomas Richardson as partner, ran a drapery and haberdashers shop in Mosley Street until the move to Market Street in the 1840s. James died at Benton House in 1867 after living for many years at Burdon Place in
Brandling Village and was succeeded by his son Herbert. His son, another Herbert carried on the business until 1928.
There were many proposals for the Coxon site, including the creation of a super cinema, but it was Sunderland based Binns Ltd that moved in with a view to establishing themselves in Newcastle for the North East Coast exhibition of 1929. It is said that next door neighbours, Bainbridge, had considered Coxon s selling price too expensive.

24/7/2009. "William was born around 1869 (you probably already have this as he was born in Belford), His wife Margaret was born around1867, their son John was born around 1891 and the daughter Grace around 1899. In the 1901 census they are living at 1 Hamilton Street (Blackburn). Margaret was born in Padiham (Lancashire) and the children were born in Blackburn. "
27/7/2009. "Unfortunately i have just found out that there has been a major mix up in my family tree research. We were sure that Grace was born in Blackburn but much to my dismay my grace was born in Burnley! Thus the Grace Johnson i have given you information on is not my Grace. The info is otherwise correct except for the marriage to Robert Brown. "

Just to add a few more points to Robert. He married Mary on the 9th August 1897 at All Saints Parish Church in Blackburn, and her sister Sarah Ann Talbot and Alexander Johnson were the witnesses to that marriage. Robert was 23 and Mary was 20. According to the Marriage Certificate Robert's profession was put as an 'Agent' of what I have no idea!, and his father John was a Shoemaker. Mary's profession was as a 'Warper' and her father Thomas Talbot was a Spinner. I have Mary's birth down as 1877 and she died on the 24th December 1958. Both Robert and Mary died in Blackpool and they are buried together in a local cemetry which I went to put some flowers on when I was down there 2 weeks ago.

So far as my Grandad is concerned, he was born Henry Atkinson on the 31st March 1901 to his father William Atkinson and his mother Margaret (Nee Cragg) in Blackpool. He married my Grandmother Elsie Johnson on the 14th May 1923 at the Parish Church, South Shore, Blackpool, when my Grandad was 22 and my Grandmother was 18. The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Atkinson (who is Henry's brother - I think) and one of her sisters Ada Johnson. Curiously at this point in Robert's life he was now a Window Cleaner. He does seem to have had quite a few different jobs over his life time, since on his Death Certificate in 1950 his occupation was put down as a retired brewery representative, I think he was a commercial traveller for a local brewery in the Blackpool area. From some of the tales my Grandma used to tell me about Robert, I think this job would have suited him! My Grandfather Henry died on the 26th August 1975 in Blackpool and my Grandmother Elsie was born on the 16th July 1904 in Great Harwood, Blackburn and died on the 16th September 1989 in Blackpool.
