Just a note about the point on your web site about Agnes moving to
Teesside. I think this may have been misinterpreted by Paul Walton as I
understand that my grandfather and grandmother were brought up in and
around Chester-le-Street (I believe Pelton Fell). I think it was my
grandparents that moved to Hartlepool (possibly) to become licensees of
a public house. There is a census record (1901) indicating Albert &
Elizabeth living together with John Thomas and Agnes McMeikan. (See
    http: //freepages. genealogy. rootsweb. ancestry. com/~jeffpiper/p34. htm#i995
    ).

The line goes something like this
    G Grandfather (unknown)
    Agnes McMEIKEN
    + Elizabeth
+ Albert Richard (1893 apparently Bessemer Michigan) [my paternal
    grandfather]
    John THOMAS
    Agnes McMeiken
    +Sarah
    +Mary
    +Jean
    +Edna
    +Warwick

    Albert Richard McMEIKEN (THOMAS)
Margaret Wilson (b1896 Chester-le-Street, died Mauchline, Ayrshire about
    1984)
    +John Thomas McMIEKEN(b1920?, died 2006)
    +Sonia (b1928?, died about 1980)
+Albert Richard McMeiken THOMAS(b1936, living my father)
    +Margot (b1936, living)

If you are able to discuss with your mother in law, would it be possible
    to mention the information below?

I'd be specifically interested in any information you may have about
John Thomas as I know nothing about him. I do understand that Mary
Herdman was a very close sister to Agnes so I believe there is a
possibility that the marriage to John Thomas may be "verbally
documented" in the Herdman family somewhere. Perhaps there is also some
information about the birth of my grandfather - the information I'd
really like to discover. He fought in the First WW 1 in the tranches I
understand for the Durham Light Infantry and he is reported as saying
that he could have fought for the Americans if he'd wanted to. This was
probably materially of little importance as he was quite badly injured
by shrapnel and was sent home. He was apparently quite an athlete and I
understand he ran was a "good" middle distance runner in his youth. My
father says he was a wily sort and he was always able to "find money" -
I think that means entrepreneurial? He seemed to find his way as a
publican (in Hartlepool) and later as a bookmaker travelling to the
races over all of the North East. I can at least validate that bit of
information as I remember my father taking me to "the races" aged about
    5.

around Chester-le-Street (I believe Pelton Fell). I think it was my
grandparents that moved to Hartlepool (possibly) to become licensees of
a public house. There is a census record (1901) indicating Albert &
Elizabeth living together with John Thomas and Agnes McMeikan. (See
    http: //freepages. genealogy. rootsweb. ancestry. com/~jeffpiper/p34. htm#i995
    ).

The line goes something like this
    G Grandfather (unknown)
    Agnes McMEIKEN
    + Elizabeth
+ Albert Richard (1893 apparently Bessemer Michigan) [my paternal
    grandfather]
    John THOMAS
    Agnes McMeiken
    +Sarah
    +Mary
    +Jean
    +Edna
    +Warwick

    Albert Richard McMEIKEN (THOMAS)
Margaret Wilson (b1896 Chester-le-Street, died Mauchline, Ayrshire about
    1984)
    +John Thomas McMIEKEN(b1920?, died 2006)
    +Sonia (b1928?, died about 1980)
+Albert Richard McMeiken THOMAS(b1936, living my father)
    +Margot (b1936, living)

If you are able to discuss with your mother in law, would it be possible
    to mention the information below?

I'd be specifically interested in any information you may have about
John Thomas as I know nothing about him. I do understand that Mary
Herdman was a very close sister to Agnes so I believe there is a
possibility that the marriage to John Thomas may be "verbally
documented" in the Herdman family somewhere. Perhaps there is also some
information about the birth of my grandfather - the information I'd
really like to discover. He fought in the First WW 1 in the tranches I
understand for the Durham Light Infantry and he is reported as saying
that he could have fought for the Americans if he'd wanted to. This was
probably materially of little importance as he was quite badly injured
by shrapnel and was sent home. He was apparently quite an athlete and I
understand he ran was a "good" middle distance runner in his youth. My
father says he was a wily sort and he was always able to "find money" -
I think that means entrepreneurial? He seemed to find his way as a
publican (in Hartlepool) and later as a bookmaker travelling to the
races over all of the North East. I can at least validate that bit of
information as I remember my father taking me to "the races" aged about
    5.

    ---------------------------------
I found out about your site from Paul Walton who I was in contact with a few years ago in connection with my Great Great grandmother Agnes McMeiken and my grandfather Albert (son of Agnes) McMeiken. I notice you have a John Thomas married to Agnes McMeiken which as I understand it, married Agnes sometime after her return from the USA where she had worked in service in Michigan. She had returned with my grandfather and it seems she had become pregnant by a member of the household where she had been working. It s said it was the son of the owner though I have no proof of this.
Over time Albert seems to have adopted his step father s surname and became know as Albert McMeiken Thomas, though he is married Margaret Wilson as just Albert McMeiken. This was kept secret until it was uncovered fairly recently by myself and cousins trying to follow our line. My father had no inkling of this until I showed him my Uncle s birth certificate. It was clear from my Uncle s birth certificate that he was christened John Thomas McMeiken although the family passed off this apparent error as an aberration by the registrar! My grandfather/grandmother were recorded as Albert & Margaret McMeiken parents. Interestingly, by the time my father was born (in 1936), my grandparents had become Albert/Margaret Thomas.
It s fairly clear that my grandfather was illegitimate and he has gone to some lengths to cover over the fact. I wondered if you ve come across in your search any information that may point to some McMeiken connections in Michigan (in particular Bessemer) where my grandfather is supposed to have been born.
