  • She was also known as Annie (Nancy) Wilson.
  • Annie (Nancy) Coxon was Church of England.
  • She was born on 30 August 1914 in Cleveland Terrace (3), Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.1
  • Research Note: Nancy was quite clear that she was called after a Great Aunt Annie Bell, who kept the Temperance Hotel in Rothbury. However as far as can be traced the relatives at the Temperance Hotel were Great Aunt Ann Scott (ne Coxon) and husband, Joseph Scott, who were living there in the 1901 census. The name "Ann" would certainly fit into this memory.2
  • She was baptised on 23 September 1914 in St.Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.3
  • She was confirmed on 23 March 1928 in St.Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.4
  • About 1937 Annie (Nancy) Coxon was a Governess. During her time in London as a young unmarried woman Nancy was a Governess. After the death of her husband Jack she worked as a cook (The Colliery canteen at Bebside Pit, Carricks Cafe in Ashington and The Station Cafe in Blyth). After moving to a new house in Cowpen c 1952 and having her son Stoker to live with her permanently she took on the position of a School Cleaner at Bebside Junior School, which she retained until retirement.5
  • In 1937 Annie (Nancy) Coxon was a Nursemaid. Her sister Peggy says that after training in Newcastle in Domestic Science, Nancy got a job in Hampton, as Nursemaid to the two boys of a Dr. Woodrough. She came up north for Peggys 21st Birthday party in 1938, and on finding that she was pregnant never went back to Hampton.6
  • She married John George Davison (Jack) Wilson on 31 December 1938 in The Parish Church, Sherburn Village, Co. Durham, England. The marriage was witnessed by Edward Wilkes.7
  • On 31 December 1938 Annie (Nancy) Coxon lived in Front Street (42), Bebside, Northumberland, England, After her marriage to Jack Wilson on 31/12/28 the family got a Colliery house in Bebside. It was to be her home for some 13 years until about 1952 when she moved to the new Cowpen Estate.5
  • On 29 September 1939 Annie (Nancy) Coxon lived in Harley Terrace (8), Sherburn Village, Co. Durham, England, [Witness Role: Resident]
(According to Pat Wilkes she went through to Sherburn to help her sister Ellie at the birth of her daughter Pat in October 1939).8
  • About 1941 Annie (Nancy) Coxon was a Cook. Nancy worked as a cook in Ashington & Blyth.
  • About 1951 Annie (Nancy) Coxon was a School Cleaner. Nancy worked as a School Cleaner from about 1951 until retirement.
  • In 1952 Annie (Nancy) Coxon lived in Cowpen. Blyth, Northumberland, England, She moved to new house on the council estate at Cowpen as the old village of Bebside was demolished.5

Because they could not travel during the Winter months his death was not reported until the Spring thaw came. During this time he was posted missing. After WW2 his body was re-interred at Belgrade Military Cemetary.11,1,5

Family 2: Robert Coxon (b. 16 October 1875, d. 21 July 1930)

Biography

  • She was also known as Mary Coxon.
  • She was also known as Mary Temple Gordon.1
  • She was also known as Mary Temple.
  • She was buried in The Churchyard, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.
  • Mary Gordon was Church of England.
  • In some ways Mary Gordon, was thought to be strange person. When people came to call it was said the children had to hide under the dining table (covered with a large cloth) until they left. Her daughter Peggy recalls how on one occasion her mother threw a glass of beer at her when living in the Council School house. Peggy had to dry off before going back to school.2
  • A personal perspective: My own memories of my Grandma was that of a caring person, if sometimes a bit odd. I well remember how she used to love her Brown Ale with Sunday Lunch. She used to bake the most wonderful bread in a oven off the fire in the Living Room. The smell of newly baked "fages" still haunts me.
I remember the wonderful holidays we had in Newbiggin. 3 Cleveland Terrace was only a couple of hundred yards from the beach, and we used to get changed in the house, and taking towels and picnics down to the beach spend long days swimming, building sandcastles, exploring rock pools and if we were lucky a boat trip or a trip on the "shuggie boats" (Swings).
In the Cleveland Terrace house there was only one large dining/living room and a scullery/bathroom downstairs so when the family came to stay things were tight! Sometimes there was as many as four families with up to seven adults and six children staying in a two bedroom terraced house. People trebled up in beds, slept in "shaky downs" on the bedroom floors, and three slept in the fold-away bed settee downstairs. And always of course there was the "pottie" under the bed since there was no inside toilet. Nocturnal visits meant fishing it from under and using it in the darkness.
The kitchen doubled up for a kitchen and bathroom (without toilet, which was across the yard). A board covered the bath when not in use and served as a table. I don't remember many bathtimes there. A very primitive gas cooker served for making meals not cooked on the open fire. There was an out-house accessible from the back door and giving into the yard. This provided the washing equipment - a large poss tub and a heavy old mangle. At least we had electric light!3
  • She was born on 3 October 1879 in Swan Street (38), Gateshead, Co. Durham, England.4,5
  • She married John Joseph Temple on 3 June 1899 in The Venerable Bede, Gateshead, Co. Durham, England, when he was 24y.6,7
  • She married Robert Coxon on 15 June 1907 in Morpeth, Northumberland, England. The marriage was witnessed by Margaret Ann Mitford and George John Coxon. Peggy Wright recalls that Mary was a barmaid at the Ship Inn, Newbiggin. It was there that she met Robert Coxon her future husband. There's a mystery here! Married in 1907 to Robert. Former husband John Joseph Temple did not die until 1910. Marriage Cert to Robert lists her as "Spinster". Did she divorce Joseph? Had she moved to Newbiggin to get away from Joseph?8,5,9
  • She lives at Address on 15 June 1907 in Argyle Terrace (8), Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England, (This was the at the time of marriage to Robert).1

Biography

  • Robert Coxon was Church of England.
  • Robert Coxon was a Joiner. (listed as such in the 1901 & 1911 census), but he also helped his brother Matthew as an Undertaker based at RedRow, Northumberland. In the later years of his life he was a School Caretaker.1,2
  • Robert Coxon lived in Newbiggin By the Sea, Northumberland, England, The family seem to have had several addresses in the Newbiggin Area. For a while they lived in the East School House whilst Robert was caretaking there. They seemed to have re-located to 3 Cleveland Terrace, after Robert's death to a house they already owned.
  • He was born on 16 October 1875 in Dinnington, Northumberland, England.3
  • He experienced Accident about 1894 in Newbiggin By the Sea, Northumberland, England, Robert accidently shot himself in the head whilst out shooting with a friend & dogs on Newbiggin Moor. He was rushed to The RVI in Newcastle with severe head wounds. He had a silver plate put in his head to cover the skull damage. Peggy Wright says that ever afterwards when he sneezed he had to cover the old wound. See citation for details in a newspaper clipping.4
  • Family note estimated 1905 Robert was in a relationship with Alice Davison before meeting Mary Gordon. Alice became pregnant and they wished to marry but apparently her family opposed this and the relationship broke up. It was many years later that their son, Ernie Davison, met his half brother Robert Coxon while both lived & worked in Longframlington and Ernie was welcomed into the Coxon family as a long lost brother.5
  • Biographical Note: Re Amy Temple. Amy was Robert's Stepdaughter, the child of Robert Coxon's wife, Mary, by Joseph Temple. After his marriage to Mary, Amy was always considered to be part of the family. I personally remember visits of "Aunty Amy" from Canada to the family home in Newbiggin. Her name is listed in the family Bible as "Amy Coxon"though official records refer to her as "Amy Temple".6,7
  • He married Mary Gordon on 15 June 1907 in Morpeth, Northumberland, England. Had she moved to Newbiggin to get away from Joseph?8,3,9
  • After 15 June 1907 Robert Coxon lived in Argyle Terrace (8), Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England, (The Argyle Terrace address is listed on Robert's marriage certificate).
  • His daughter Peggy tells of an incident when her father was dying. He sat up in bed suddenly, stretched his arms to the windows and said "Alice". According to her mother, Alice was the girl he had been engaged to, and by whom he had had a baby boy called Ernie. Alice was Alice Davison; he had wanted to marry Alice but her family would not allow it. Ernie was a half brother to the Coxon family.
  • He died on 21 July 1930 in East Council School House, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.10,3,11,12
  • He was buried on 24 July 1930 in The Churchyard, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.13

  4. [S138] Newspaper cutting recording an accident to Robert Coxon, Early on Wednesday morning Robert Coxon (19), of Newbiggin, with two companions went out in the direction of Cresswell Rocks on a shooting excursion. Feeling tired, Coxon lay down for a rest and went to sleep. Burn and the other youth shortly after this heard a report, and running back, found Coxon lying over his gun. He had severe head injuries. It appears that when he lay down he had tied his dog to his gun, and that the animal had been moving about and by some means or other exploded it. The poor lad was removed to his parent's house and seen by Dr. Evers, who ordered his removal to the Newcastle Infirmary

John Coxon

M, #17, Deceased, b. 23 February 1841, d. 20 April 1907

Parents

  • Father*: Henry Coxon (b. 4 February 1800, d. about February 1867)
  • Mother*: Susannah Coxon (b. 9 March 1804, d. about 25 July 1851)

Family: Mary Elizabeth Bell (b. 12 May 1844, d. 15 January 1922)

Biography

  • He was buried in The Churchyard, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England.1
  • John Coxon was a Farm labourer. He seems to have started life as a farm labourer with his uncles Robert & George. He is listed as a Miner on his son Robert & Mary's marriage certificate and in the 1901 census.
  • John Coxon lived John was born at Stanton Mill, near Longhorsley. When just a few months old he moved with the family to Warkworth. After the death of his parents sometime after 1851 he moved to be with his maternal Uncles, Robert & George Coxon, at their farm at East Mason, near Ponteland. He was there in 1861, and whilst there met his future wife Mary E Bell who was working at the Vicarage, Dinnington. After his marriage he moved with Mary to Seaton Burn, and then to Dinnington, where the 1881 census shows them in the Grocers shop. Most of their children were born at Dinnington, but sometime around 1884 they moved to Newbiggin by the Sea. (Nancy Wilson thought it was for health reasons to be near the sea)He spent the rest of his life at Newbiggin.
  • By the time of his parents death about 1851, of his siblings only Isaac and Ann were alive. Six of them appear to have died in infancy or childhood. Isaac died without marrying in 1872. Ann had married Joseph Scott, and they appear to have has only one child, Isaac.
  • A note about Henry and Susannah's Ancestry.
See note in Baptism record of Henry identifying their parents Isaac Coxon & Eleanor Coxon. Henry & Susannah were first cousins. Henry's mother Eleanor and Susannah's father, John, were sister and brother. They shared the same Grandparents, William Coxon and Susannah Mather. There is another Coxon line coming in on Henry's father's side, Isaac (1764) - Henry (1735) - William (1701), but as at 1/12/2006, there is no proven link between the two Coxon lines.
    Witness Role.
  • He was born on 23 February 1841 in Stanton Mill, Longhorsley, Northumberland, England+.2,3
  • He married Mary Elizabeth Bell on 28 November 1870 in The Parish Church, Dinnington, Northumberland, England. (The census' show that John was living with his mother's brothers, Uncles Robert & George, at East Mason farm, Dinnington. At about the same time Mary was a servant at the Vicarage. They probably met up during village social life before getting married).4
  • He died on 20 April 1907 in Ferndene House, Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland, England. (The Coxon Family Bible gives the date of death as 20/4/1908 aged 65, but John is said to be deceased at the time of Robert & Mary's Marriage on 15/6/1907. It is possible that the date in Bible is wrong).1,5
