Age is one day out! [4/5/17] This appears to be some sort of hostel holding some 30 people. RSW remembers Peggy telling him she and Jack were bombed out of their home. Could this have been a temporary shelter, though it's too early in the war for bombing to have started).9

  4. [S893] The Newcastle Journal, Pools winner "went to pieces' - spent £10, 000 in 2 years.
A man who started gambling and drinking after the death of his wife, spent about £10, 000 in two years, he said at Newcastle magistrates court yesterday.
Albert Arthur Johnson (61), of no fixed address, admitted obtaining a car worth £548 9s 6d from St.Mary s Motors, Newcastle, by false pretences. He was fined £25.
Johnson said that when his wife died in 1957 he went to pieces .
I took to drink and I gambled heavily. I had won some money on the pools and elsewhere and I got through about £10, 000 in the two years after my wife s death.
Superintendent H. Porter said that the car was sold to Johnson by Mr. William Christer, secretary and director of the firm on December 12.
Johnson signed a hire purchase agreement and gave Christer a cheque for £100 drawn on Barclays Bank, Chester-Le-Street and 15s. in cash.
    RETURNED
Johnson took the car away at once. Within the next few days Christer had the cheque returned and also documents he had sent to an address in Birtley given to him by Johnson.
Johnson said he now had no money at all. He lived in hotels and at his holiday caravan in Seahouses after having a row with his daughter with whom he loved when his wife died.
Johnson, an engineer, continued: When I lost my job I thought the only means of looking round for another was to travel round by car. I know I ve been a fool. I hope to make a fresh start.

Robert (Keg) Wilson1

M, #43, Deceased, b. 17 May 1854, d. 13 March 1938
Robert (Keg) Wilson

Parents

Family: Elizabeth Brown (b. 20 April 1858, d. about 15 August 1913)

Biography

  • Robert (Keg) Wilson was a Miner/Colliery Master Wasteman. He worked as a Colliery Master Wasteman. (The "master wasteman" was a very important job in the mines, and his duties included making sure all the vital airways in the mine were kept clear).2
  • Note on residences: Nan Hunter said that he lived in Front Street, Bebside. He subsequently moved in with the family at Richardson's Buildings, Scotland Gate. Then moved with them to 3 Mansel Terrace, Bebside. Apparently he did not like living there and eventually moved to be with his daughter Minnie at 96 6th Avenue, Blyth where he lived until his death.
  • He was born on 17 May 1854 in Netherton, Northumberland, England.3
  • Lil High recalls memories of Keg. He worked in the lamphouse at Bebside Colliery. She recalls one occasion when on a walk up "The Lonnen" at Bebside he sat to rest on a seat with his cap on the ground. A friend passing by put a penny in the cap. He was very angry. On another occasion, he was carving a Christmas turkey, and stopped and swore loudly - the crop has not been taken from the bird before it was cooked and served. He walked with a stick as he grew older.4
  • He married Elizabeth Brown on 13 August 1888 in The Register Office, Morpeth, Northumberland, England.5
  • On 26 July 1896 Robert (Keg) Wilson lived in Front Row (50), Bebside, Northumberland, England, (At the time of his daughter Margaret's birth).6
  • On 17 January 1900 Robert (Keg) Wilson lived in Front Row (50), Bebside, Northumberland, England, (At the time of the death of his father).7
  • He was very much respected for his work in mine rescue. Nan Hunter says that Robert was the subject of a newspaper feature in the Sunday Sun c. 1936, on account of his work with mine rescue. The feature was called "Heroes of the North". Another story tells of an accident in the mine causing great alarm amongst the relatives. When one of them heard that Robert was in charge of the rescue she sat back contentedly knowing that things would turn out well.8
  • In Bebside, Northumberland, England, 15th July 1905, Robert took part in a mine rescue at Bedside Pit in which sadly three people died. He was mentioned in the official report, and it was reported in the Morpeth Herald dated 22nd July. The full report can be read at Durham Mining Museum Website. http: //www. dmm. org. uk/news19/9050722. htm.9
  • Robert was presented with a Gold watch chain and medallion in recognition for his work in mine rescue. Medallion reads: " Presented to Mr Robt Wilson by his fellow workmen, Officials and Friends in recognition on many acts of Bravery at Bebside Colliery. April 25th 1908".10
  • He witnessed the marriage of John (Jack) Wilson and Julia Annie Davison on 26 September 1914 in The Parish Church, Horton, Northumberland, England.11
  • In 1919 Robert (Keg) Wilson lived in Front Row (101), Bebside, Northumberland, England, (At the time of his daughter Margaret's wedding).2
  • He witnessed the marriage of James Selkirk Laing White and Margaret (Meg) Wilson on 22 March 1919 in The Register Office, Morpeth, Northumberland, England.2
  • He died on 13 March 1938 in Preston Road (50), North Shields, Northumberland, England. Nan Hunter says that Keg died in Preston Hospital, North Shields. Living with daughter Minnie (Henderson) at 96 6th Avenue, Blyth. Verified from Death Cert.12,8
  • He was buried about 20 March 1938 in The Churchyard, Horton, Northumberland, England. He was buried from the home of his daughter Minnie Henderson, nee Wilson. (Said by Nan Hunter to be buried at Horton).8

William Moore Young Wilson

M, #46, Deceased, b. 19 October 1820, d. 17 January 1900

Parents

Family: Isabella Taylor Robinson (b. about 1821, d. about November 1895)

Biography

  • He was also known as Sinker Bill Wilson.1
  • William Moore Young Wilson was a Coal Miner. William's occupation is recorded as being a Coal Miner. In the 1861 census his occupation is that of a "Deputy", a responsible position in the Industry. Nan Hunter said he was a "sinker" and sank Bebside Colliery. An extract from the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle dated 1873 gives a start date for the Bebside pit of 1855, which puts it into William's lifetime. He would then have been about 34 yrs. If the identification with William Wilson in Gateshead in 1841 is correct, where his occupation is given as "engineer", this would support the idea that he was a sinker since driving down deep coal shafts was a highly specialised (and dangerous) work. This was the early steam era. Born in Gateshead he was just some 10 miles from Wylam, the birth place of George Stephenson. Stephenson was born in 1813, and there would have been considerable interest in the new steam power and other inventions of the time.2,3,4,5
  • He was born on 19 October 1820 in Gateshead, Co. Durham, England.6
  • He was baptised on 1 August 1821 in St.Mary's Church, Gateshead, Co. Durham, England.6,7,8
  • He married Isabella Taylor Robinson on 25 December 1842 in St.Hilda's Church, South Shields, Co. Durham, England.9
  • On 17 May 1854 William Moore Young Wilson lived in Netherton, Northumberland, England.3
  • He witnessed the marriage of Robert (Keg) Wilson and Elizabeth Brown on 13 August 1888 in The Register Office, Morpeth, Northumberland, England.4
  • He died on 17 January 1900 in Cowpen. Blyth, Northumberland, England.10,11,12
  • He was buried on 20 January 1900 in The Parish Church, Horton, Northumberland, England.11

The personal details of individuals thought to be living have been ommitted. Only names are included to help with navigation.

On these pages "witness" may not mean that the person was actually present at the event, just that he/she was associated in some way. E.g. the father of the bride may be named on a marriage certificate, but actually be deceased.
