William Coxon

M, #387, Deceased, b. August 1761, d. May 1845

Parents

Family 1: Margaret Hair (b. about May 1769, d. estimated 1795)

Family 2: Ann Allan (b. about 1775, d. 20 November 1867)

Biography

  • William Coxon was Presbyterian.
  • William Coxon was a Farmer. His occupation is that of farmer as listed in the index of census returns for the Felton District Felton & Swarland Local History Society, Vols 1-3, (covering 1841-1891). Info from Bob Green).1
  • He was born in August 1761 in Edlingham, Northumberland, England. (DOB estimated from Date Baptism).2
  • He was baptised on 30 August 1761 in The Presbyterian Church, Longframlington, Northumberland, England.3
  • He married Margaret Hair on 5 November 1789 in Bedlington, Northumberland, England. (From Lois: Witnesses to William and Margaret are Henry Coxon & Isaac Coxon, father & brother to William).4,5
  • He married Ann Allan on 26 May 1795 in Coldstream Bridge Toll House, Coldstream, Northumberland, England. Research Note: There is a difference between researchers as to William's wife, Ann's identity. Bob Green's researches say she is Ann Allan. Adrienne Walkers researches say she is Ann Hedley, born c 1770 at Warkworth. I believe that Ann is correctly identified as Ann Allan for the following reasons:
    1) The 1795 marriage record for William and Ann at Coldstream fit in with the possible death of Margaret Coxon (nee Hair) during or soon after the birth of William in 1794.
    2) From the Coldstream registers William and Ann both come from Eglingham parish, within which is the hamlet of Brandon.
    2) A marriage to Ann Hedley would have meant the later marrying at about 15yrs age.
    3) The marriage date of 1791 with Ann Hedley is quite out of sync with Williams marriage to Margaret Hair.6,7
  • He died in May 1845 in Overgrass, Felton, Northumberland, England.8
  • He was buried on 5 May 1845 in Whittingham, Northumberland, England.9,10
