William Scott1

M, #483, Deceased, b. 8 January 1807

Family: Mary Davy (b. about July 1816)

  • Jane Scott+ (b. 27 December 1843, d. 3 January 1895)

Biography

  • He was born on 8 January 1807. (From Linda - "William's age on the census was correct once only, the rest he rounded down to be closer to his wife, Mary DAVY who was about nine years
    his junior. ").2
  • He was baptised on 25 February 1807 in The Presbyterian Church, Falstone, Northumberland, England.2
  • He married Mary Davy about 1836. (The marriage has never been found. Linda Price wonders if the were ever married - "In the Will of Mary's nephew (died aged 17 years) he goes through all his Uncles and Aunts from the Rothbury area with 'legitimate issue of' etc. but when he gets to Mary ii is just 'Mary SCOTT and family. ").2
  • (From Linda Price: William had a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth SCOTT bap March 1836 at Felton (of Burgham) to just himself - no mother mentioned. Mary DAVY had a daughter, Mary Ann DAVY baptised July 1836 (born Thropton) at Rothbury - also as a single parent. (I suspect Mary DAVY may have been employed as a wet-nurse to William and his new daughter)William and Mary went on to have ten children together, two of whom didn't survive infancy. They are all together at Bringheugh in 1861 Census. 1841 census in Low Hedgely, Eglingham. Mary's daughter, Mary Ann DAVY was with her grandparents (Robert and Ann) in Thropton at this time (1841).2

Anthony Coxon

M, #498, Deceased, b. about 1700, d. January 1780

Parents

Family: Jane Brown (b. about 1705, d. September 1746)

Biography

  • He was born about 1700. (DOB estimated from DOM, allow marriage at 30yrs age).1
  • There is an open question as to whether the link from William of Overgras to Anthony & Jane of Redesdale is valid. It calls for a 2 year error in DOD on William's gravestone, not unusual but not rock solid. Two of his sons were called William and George, the same names as possible father's brothers. But if he was the son of Anthony then he has chosen not to call any of his sons after his father, Anthony. For the time being I have chosen to assume the link is valid, until proven otherwise.2
  • Anthony is the earliest Coxon ancestor traced with some certainty, but see the research notes for William Coxon which explains a possible question between Anthony of Redesdale and William of Overgrass.
The Coxon's lived at Woolaw, a farm some 5 miles west of Otterburn, from at least the begining of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century. There is considerable evidence of the Coxons at Woolaw over the generations, but little hard evidence to show which son succeeded which father. For a fuller discussion see my document "The Coxons of Woolaw". See also the manuscripts of W Percy Hedley, cited here, author of "Northumbrian Families", and also the book "The story of Redesdale" by Beryl Charlton (also cited) which appears to draw heavily on the work of W Percy Hedley.3,4,5,6
  • He married Jane Brown on 14 January 1730 in Elsdon, Northumberland, England.7,1
  • Poll Book 1748. - George Coxon, Rattenraw; Anthony Coxon, Woolaw; Edward Coxon, Rattenraw.5
  • A lease of dwelling house & land belonging to Robert Anderson in High Rochester in 1755 mentions one "Anthony Coxon, gentleman of Moolaw". Allowing for miss recording of Moolaw for Woolaw, this seems to refer to our Anthony.8
  • He died in January 1780 in Woollaw, Elsdon, Northumberland, England.1
  • He was buried on 23 January 1780 in The Churchyard, Elsdon, Northumberland, England.1
